    1. kinda of reverse pareidolia I guess. Like .. I deliberately make things that look like things to me but I also am interested in hiding my intentions behind apophenia .
Or even more pompously , I like symbols that are recognized as symbols but without any other information being communicated. So the meaning of the symbol is like in hazy interspace of potential meanings and is yet to collapse into one meaning.
Most of my tattoos are like this too.

I also love the robot building boxes in Mona-lisa overdrive (or was it count zero.. or even Neuromancer? From that trilogy anyway) , like what it would like if something not human was trying to make stuff that looked meaningful to humans but its awareness is completely outside of human experience.

Especially if those things were meant to look like sorcery of some kind.

  2. Cool, apophenia is a good term that I'll use in my arsenal of tricks against flamboyant credulity -which is rife where I am from.

I like the ethnographic museological aspect of these things, I am always more satisfied by people who have a kind of persona or imagined cultural context within which they are making their objects but there tends to be a bit of an allergic abhorrence from some people who suspect their might be something inauthentic going on (are they props?). I guess anytime you are making things with fetishistic (in the magical sense) qualities then you are describing an imaginary reality in which these things function -because they do have the illusion of function, they exist not only for passive edification of the ennobled populace but in order to manipulate reality in funky ways.

I get the idea that these things might evoke the process of being a Palaeolithic Pleistocene Person and encountering the apotropaic icons of an alien culture and not knowing precisely how to read the signs but getting a gist. But I have always hated the post-structuralist nurture over nature thing and am prone to burrowing for common bone structure even when I'm barking up the wrong tree (to fuck up some metaphors).

    1. I have read this comment like 5 or 6 times, but unfortunately have nothing else to add but to nod sagely in agreement
